Hurricane Preparedness Checklist 2022 From JeanineCorcoran’s Personal Experience

Welcome to the 22nd episode of Discover Harmony Florida. Thisweek’s podcast focuses on making sure you are prepared forhurricane season. Kristin started off the podcast by announcing itis the beginning of hurricane season. She said the first hurricaneof the year has been named “Alex”. Jeanine added that they name the storms inalphabetical order throughout each hurricane season.

Jeanine and Kristin were discussing the fact that Florida nowhas a lot of transplants and these new people to the statearen’t aware of all the things that one should be as we enterthe storm season. So, they wanted to provide some tips to help keeppeople safe.

All of the disaster websites and kits include a list of all thelinks you need to include in your hurricane kit. For example, thewebsite FloridaDisaster.org is specifically for Florida andhas a checklist for hurricane season.

Jeanine stated that she can talk from experience as she haslived in Florida since 1987. Usually in Central Florida schoolswill be let out for a predicted hurricane day and it typically endsup being a beautiful day and so you head to the beach. This isJeanine's usual experience since 1987.

What Hurricane Preparedness Websites AreMissing

However, in 2004 we ended up having 4 hurricanes in a row in aspan of 6 weeks. Jeanine said from her experience there are a lotof things that are not on those hurricane preparedness lists thatone would need going through hurricane season. She and Kristinwanted to share their list with everything in Harmony Florida.

Kristin started the list by first mentioning for those takingmedication to have on hand at least a two-week supply. Next wasmaking sure you have all your medical devices in good working orderand any batteries needed for those devices. Flashlights are a must.Having a weather radio on hand is a good idea and of course, bottled water.

Jeanine said when a hurricane hits, cell phone towers are downand that means cell phones will not work. Kristin then said makesure you have all your pet stuff ready to go in the case of a stormthat shuts things down for a bit.

Kristin stated that they had no power for weeks back in 2004when all those hurricanes hit Florida. She remembers taking a lotof cold showers. Luckily, they were not on a well because whenthere is no power, there is no water.

The Four Hurricanes Of 2004 That Hit Central FloridaAnd What We Learned

Jeanine asked Kristin if she remembered the names of the 4hurricanes. Kristin started with “Charlie” and Jeanineadded that Charlie was the worst of the 4 hurricanes and knockeddown all the trees. Charlie was a category 4 and moved so fast itwas crazy.

Kristin said they were not prepared because everyone thoughtthat it wouldn’t reach Central Florida and basically wouldend up being a lot of rain. She continued that on the heels ofCharlie and being without power for a few weeks along comesHurricane Francis. Hurricane Ivan hit the panhandle area. Finally, there was hurricane Jean to wrap up the four that hit us in2004.

She said that was a tough year for Central Floridians in termsof power loss, and property damage and as a result, everyone hadhurricane fatigue. Kristin stated she believes it gave a lot ofpeople anxiety over the next few years.

Jeanine said it took us a while to get over it but as a result,we learned a lot from it. One of the things that Jeanine learnedwas having “hurricane shutters” didn’t work forher. It left your home completely dark with no power and no air andthat didn’t make sense to her.

Jeanine’s PersonalHurricane Preparedness Plan

So, after the first hurricane in 2004, they came up with a plan. She went and got heavy-duty tarps and nails and of course a hammer. If you wait and try and go right before the storm hits, it’stoo late and the stores will be out of tarps and nails.

Also, have heavy-duty shower curtains to replace putting ducttape on your windows. The duct tape is for a precaution so if yourwindow shatters, the glass won’t go everywhere. Theheavy-duty shower curtains do the same thing using staples and youdon’t have to worry about getting the melted tape off yourwindows.

That was the preparedness part and now Kristin wanted to shiftgears to the comfort part. When those hurricanes hit in 2004,Kristin was 6 months pregnant, and it was in the middle of thesummer on August 13th when the first storm hit. One ofthe things she learned was to have cash on hand. When the power isout, they can’t process credit cards and you need cash to buyeveryday things that you need.

Jeanine was reflecting on having to make instant coffee duringthat time because again, the power was out, and the normal routineis out the window. So, if you are a coffee drinker, you might wantto have some instant coffee on hand.

Hurricane Season In Florida Goes From June To The EndOf November

Kristin was saying during those horrendous four hurricanes thatif she had a personal fan that really would have helped her andmade her feel better. Being 6 months pregnant in that heat is notfun, a little personal fan would have helped.

Jeanine said the official hurricane season goes from June1st to November 30th. She stated that thesestorms only happen during the hot months. So, take the time andprepare and check all the essential things off on your list so youdon’t have to stress and worry when a storm or hurricane doeshit.
